From the moment Subaru arrived in Lugunica, Return by Death appeared to work in a predictable way.
Every time he died, he returned to a specific checkpoint where he still had an opportunity to change the future.
By using the knowledge gained from his previous deaths, he gradually overcame seemingly impossible situations and protected the people he cared about.
Return by Death Seemed to Follow Subaru’s Goals
At first, it seemed as though Return by Death was designed to help Subaru accomplish his own objectives.
Whenever he solved a major crisis, the checkpoint advanced, permanently locking away the previous timeline.
Because this happened repeatedly throughout the first three story arcs, Subaru naturally assumed that the ability saved his progress only after he had successfully achieved his goal.
This created the illusion that Subaru was unconsciously controlling the checkpoints.
The Rem Incident Completely Changed That Belief
Everything changed after the battle against Petelgeuse.
Although Subaru defeated the Sin Archbishop of Sloth and helped destroy the White Whale, a new tragedy struck almost immediately afterward.
Lye Batenkaitos of Gluttony devoured Rem’s name and memories, leaving her in a deep coma while erasing her existence from everyone’s memories except Subaru.
For Subaru, this was one of his greatest failures.

The checkpoints did not always advance after Subaru accomplished his goal.
Instead, they advanced whenever Subaru reached the point that allowed him to continue progressing toward Satella’s ultimate goal.
This perfectly explained why Subaru could never return to save Rem.

From the perspective of Return by Death, there was no reason to move the checkpoint backward.

Each save point placed Subaru at the latest possible moment where success remained achievable.

Instead, Return by Death constantly pushed him toward the future.

If the checkpoints truly existed for Subaru’s personal happiness, they would never have locked away the chance to save Rem.

What Arc 7 Revealed
Arc 7 revealed that Return by Death was influenced by Satella.
When Subaru’s connection to Satella became disrupted, Return by Death began creating far more brutal checkpoints, leaving him with almost no time to prepare before dying.
Instead of receiving checkpoints that gave him a realistic chance to overcome a crisis, Subaru was trapped in devastating death loops that forced him to die countless times.
This strongly suggested that Satella normally influenced Return by Death’s checkpoint system.
Rather than placing Subaru at random points in time, the ability appeared to guide him toward a future that aligned with Satella’s own objective.
Although the exact nature of Satella’s plan remains one of Re:Zero’s greatest mysteries, Arc 7 reinforced the idea that Return by Death was not simply an ability that served Subaru’s personal desires.
Instead, it guided him toward a destination that he himself did not yet fully understand.
Final Thoughts
For much of Re:Zero, Return by Death appeared to be Subaru’s greatest blessing, allowing him to retry every failure until he achieved the future he wanted.

Rather than creating the future Subaru desired, Return by Death continually placed him at the point where he could continue moving toward Satella’s ultimate goal, a destination that Subaru himself still did not fully understand.
